About Gunfitters

I started Gunfitters in 1988. My goal was to create holsters that fit precisely to each individual pistol. Hence, the Gunfitters.

I've learned leathercraft from some of the old masters, through study, and in person. Ann & Al Stohlman and Bob Brown were early influences. Leather craftsmanship is an old and honorable art. The leather guild system still exists, but far from the secretive guilds of medieval times, the present day guilds are a willing source of knowledge and experience. To be judged by ones' peers in the craft is the best quality control program I know. While some manufacturers may call their products "custom," you have not seen true custom leather until you visit some of the guild shows: boots, saddles, and art all in the medium of leather.

My first holster entry years ago in the Prairie States Leather Guild show, in Aurora, IL, won me honorable mention for workmanship. The holster was similar to a Milt Sparks Summer Special, but had a trailing full slot for small-of-the-back carry also. The cowboy western holster makers were not sure what it was, but concurred it was well made and was sure stitched "purty". I'm a member of the International Internet Leathercrafters Guild, you can link to them here.

Gunfitters doesn't stop at superior leather workmanship. The best made holster can get you killed in the serious world of defensive pistol unless sound tactical principles are the foundation of design. I've served as an officer in the military, and past member of the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers (ASLET). I am a Wisconsin DNR Hunter Safety instructor, and NRA certified firearms instructor specializing in practical pistol concealed carry. Some of my influences in this area are: Jeff Cooper, Massad Ayoob, John Farnam and Ken Hackathorn. Few holster makers have experience with both sides of the two-sided coin of craftsmanship and defensive handgun. Several custom holster makers do fit this description and I am indebted for their help and encouragement. Among them are: Andy Arratoonian, Ken Null, and Bruce Nelson.

Sincerely,
Steve Pulley,
